Davises Head For Mira Mesa

The moves are just as frequent, they just don’t cover as much mileage these days.

For the third time in four years, the Bob Davis family will uproot and follow its football instincts, this time, from the Davis’ current home in Del Mar to an area within the San Diego School District that includes Mira Mesa High School.

Davis, the former Torrey Pines High football coach who lost his teaching job there because of budget cutbacks, confirmed Friday that he has accepted a job as Mira Mesa’s offensive coordinator under Coach Brad Griffith.

As he has in the past, the package deal will include Davis’ son, Chad, who needs 2,229 yards to break Todd Marinovich’s national all-time high school passing record.

Chad has passed for 6,953 yards, 57 touchdowns and thrown only nine interceptions in three seasons at Palm Springs and Torrey Pines high schools. The Falcons were 4-6-1 last season and ended their season with a 34-14 loss to Mira Mesa in the opening round of the 3-A San Diego Section playoffs.

“They beat us pretty badly,” Bob Davis said, “but they never said anything bad about us. We liked and respected their coaches and we took a liking to the kids. A friendship developed.”

Bob Davis said he turned down several opportunities to coach in Orange County and out of state. Because his wife teaches in San Diego, they preferred to stay in the area.

“This seemed like the best of all the opportunities,” said Bob Davis, who hoped his family would find a new home by July 1. “We really didn’t want to pack up and move.”

Griffith was unavailable for comment but Mira Mesa Athletic Director Tim Cunningham said he knew the arrangement was being talked about and that Griffith hires his own staff.

Bob Davis said he interviewed Friday for a teaching position--he taught history at Torrey Pines--and was confident about his chances of being hired.

According to Bob, Chad didn’t participate in Mira Mesa’s spring football training.
