PITCHER DEREK FAHS Fountain Valley Fahs set school records for most victories in a season (13), most strikeouts in a season (136) and most victories in a career (23). He was named co-player of the year in the Sunset League along with Ocean View pitcher Randy Karliner. Fahs will attend Cal State Fullerton in the fall. 1991 pitching record

PITCHER RANDY KARLINER Ocean View Karliner established school career records for victories (19), earned-run average (1.80) and strikeouts (152) in three seasons. He also recorded five saves in relief and batted .325 with four home runs for the Seahawks. A standout quarterback, Karliner will attend Mississippi State on a football scholarship. 1991 pitching record

PITCHER GUY PINELLI Troy Pinelli, a lanky left-hander, was second in the county to Fountain Valley’s Derek Fahs with 94 strikeouts. He struck out nine Capistrano Valley batters in his final high school game, a 2-1 loss in the second round of the Southern Section Division 4-A playoffs. 1991 pitching record

PITCHER JON SPAULDING Dana Hills Spaulding was named the player of the year in the South Coast League after leading the Dolphins to the league championship. CATCHER STEVE FRIEDRICH Troy Friedrich flirted with the county’s single-season home run record (13) for most of the year before tailing off in the final month of the season. He still led the county with 10 homers and 37 RBIs and threw out 63% of the runners who attempted to steal. He will attend Cal State Fullerton in the fall. 1991 batting record

FIRST BASEMAN JOE AGUIRRE Garden Grove Aguirre was the county’s top batter with a .552 average and also struck out 73 batters in 56 innings. He hit seven doubles, eight triples, stole 10 bases and scored 18 runs. Aguirre was named co-player of the year in the Garden Grove League with La Quinta outfielder Walter Dawkins. 1991 batting record

INFIELDER AARON BOONE Villa Park Boone, son of former Angel catcher Bob Boone, was the co-player of the year in the Century League with El Modena infielder Jason Wakefield. Boone stole 22 bases, scored 20 runs and had three saves as a pitcher. He was a mid-round selection by the Angels but will attend USC in the fall. 1991 batting record

INFIELDER RICH HILLS Esperanza Hills was the key player in the infield for the county’s top-ranked team. A power-hitting shortstop, he had nine doubles and five homers and scored 25 runs for Esperanza. Hills was the co-player of the year in the Empire League along with El Dorado’s Tyson DowDell. 1991 batting record

UTILITY TYSON DOWDELL El Dorado DowDell is the only junior to earn first-team honors. Named Empire League co-MVP, he was El Dorado’s top pitcher with an 8-1 record and a 1.90 earned-run average and was equally effective at the plate. DowDell was the team’s best power hitter with five homers and 25 RBIs. He also scored 29 runs. 1991 batting record

DESIGNATED HITTER GREG TIPPIN Canyon Tippin hit seven home runs, including four in the Anaheim Lions Easter Tournament. He played in the outfield, at first base and pitched, but his future seems to be at first base, even though he was 4-1 with a 1.15 earned-run average as a pitcher. OUTFIELDER JONATHAN PETKE Capistrano Valley The ultimate leadoff hitter, Petke walked 23 times, had 35 hits, stole 15 bases and scored 27 runs for the Southern Section’s 4-A division champions. Petke was the team’s top power hitter as a junior but made a smooth transition into becoming a contact hitter. He will attend California in the fall. 1991 batting record

OUTFIELDER SHAWN GREEN Tustin Green is Orange County’s career hit leader in hits with 147 in his four years and ranks third on the Southern Section’s all-time list. He has signed with Stanford and also was the 15th player selected in the amateur free-agent draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. He also stole 11 bases this past season. 1991 batting record

OUTFIELDER WALTER DAWKINS La Quinta Dawkins was the county’s most versatile player over the past three seasons. A power hitter with speed, he stole 20 bases and also won three games as a pitcher. INFIELDER BEN MUNOZ Tustin Munoz transferred from Mater Dei after his freshman season and played for Tustin’s junior varsity team as a sophomore.
