After Tuesday’s first round of the Desert Junior tournament in Rancho Mirage, Brian Smock of Chula Vista and Coronado High, the 1991 Section champion, is four strokes off the lead at the par-72 Mission Hills Country Club.

Ted Purdy of Scottsdale, Ariz., leads the boys’ 15-18 division at 71.
