SPORTS BRIEFS : Millikan Hitter Chosen Player of Year

Senior Dante Powell, who batted .438 for Millikan High School, champion of the CIF Southern Section 5A Division, was chosen division Player of the Year by the All-Southern California Board of Athletics of the Amateur Athletic Foundation.

First team 5A honors went to Greg Gregory (Millikan), David Resser (Lakewood) and Brent Bell (St. John Bosco). Nomar Garciaparra (St. John Bosco), Noe Negrete (St. Paul) and Marcus McCain (Jordan) made the second team, and Pat Thacker (Millikan) was on the third team.

In the 4A Division, Rolando Avila (Paramount) received first team honors, followed by second teamers Bobby Post (Gahr), Steve Lopez (Paramount) and Rickey Cradle (Cerritos). Scott Drulias (Cerritos) is on the third team.

Winners of 3A first team honors were Mike Greenlee (La Mirada), Jason LaBlanc (La Serna) and Jeff Ferguson (La Serna). Second team awards were presented to Bryan Dunagan (La Serna) and Mike Moschetti (La Mirada). Jose Peraza (Norwalk), Ben Hoagland (Norwalk) and Steve Pereira (La Mirada) took third team spots.

Dan Gutierrez (St. Anthony) was awarded a first team berth in the 2A Division.

In the 1A Division, first team honors went to Kyle Dykstra and Brooks Morris (both of Valley Christian). Tachos Rios (Whitney) received a spot on the second team.

Leffingwell Christian’s Andre Robinson made the first team in the Small Schools Division.

Jose Carrillo (South Gate) and Rolando Bell (Bell) made the City Section 3A team.

The Belmont Shore Rugby Football Club will play host to its Calypso Beach Party from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 6 at Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach. The cost is $15 on the day of the event. Information: 438-0073.

Cal State Dominguez Hills Coach Marine Cano will conduct a youth soccer camp July 15 to 19 at DeMille Middle School, 7025 E. Parkcrest St., Long Beach. Information: 782-8324.

Teams composed of players from Dominguez, South Gate and Jordan high schools are entered in the seventh Carson Summer Grand Finale youth basketball tournament to begin Tuesday at Carson High School. Information: 831-9909.
