‘Canes Still Kicking in Fight for National Title

The Mission Viejo Hurricanes Soccer Club, composed of girls under age 16, won the recent Western Regional Soccer Competition in Denver and won the right to play in the July 24 National Cup Competition in Omaha, Neb.

Clubs from 13 states competed in the Denver contest.

Club members are Tiffany Brown, Rancho Santa Margarita High; Kim Campbell, Canyon High; Jenny Clabaugh, Traci Jensen, Denise Kenyon, Ami Rae, Amanda Stack and Paige Viloria, El Toro High; Tammi Damon and Shannon Pickett, Trabuco Hills High; Amber Escobedo, Mater Dei High; Lea Hada, Dana Hills High; Sarah McGovern, Mission Viejo High; Christine Hallenbeck, St. Margareta High; Berkeley Edwards and Kelly Robson, Laguna Hills High, and Alison Wright, Capistrano Valley High.

Costa Mesa High senior Derrick L. Walker, who recently completed his second term as a Newport-Mesa Unified School District student board member, was honored with a resolution of appreciation from the board for his service.

District Supt. John W. Nicoll commended Walker, saying: “He is interested, asks questions (and) is not the least bit afraid to challenge authority patterns.”

Eighteen Latino professionals will be honored Sunday at the Anaheim Hilton and Towers to recognize their graduation from a leadership conference sponsored by the United Way of Orange County Hispanic Development Council.

They attended sessions dealing with essentials of leadership, what makes for exceptional people, effective public speaking and effective use of the media.

The graduates are Gabriela R. Alvaraz, Ruben Alvarez Jr., Bruce Anderson-Monserratte, Adraine Brindis, Dorothy Castillo, Alfred C. Chavez, Carmen Chavez, Irma Garcia, Ana Gonzalez, Elena Lopez, Mary Martinet, Jaime Mata, Elena M. Mora, Manual M. Palacio, Javier Rivera, Rick Rodriguez, Thomas Serafin and Letticia M. Valenzuela.

Newport Beach resident Melvin Jaffee was awarded an honorary doctorate from Tel Aviv University recognizing his “dynamism at the forefront of many humanitarian, Jewish and civic causes.”

Huntington Beach resident Tanya Brown, a general education major, has been elected president of the Associated Students of Golden West College.

Brown said enhancing student awareness and involvement are at the top of her agenda.

“There are a lot of opportunities for students to get involved at Golden West College,” she said, adding that “student government is one of the best outside-of-the-classroom laboratories” in which students can participate.

Dorothy Mathers, director of volunteer and community involvement at Olive Crest, an Anaheim treatment center for abused children, has been named Outstanding Director of Volunteers by the Orange County Directors of Volunteers in Agencies.

For their hundreds of volunteer hours, Anita Castle and Lynn Duncan, both of Santa Ana, have been named Volunteers of the Year by the Orange County Sexual Assault Network.

Network board members recognized for outstanding service are Marc Hedgpeth and Diane Weinhold.

The Newport Beach Police Department was selected for its outstanding service to rape victims and Western Medical Center-Santa Ana was honored for its outstanding emergency room care for rape victims.

Professional achievement awards were presented to Amy Buch of Santa Ana, educator for Planned Parenthood; Jennifer Gibson of Irvine, counselor for the UC Irvine Disabled Students Service, and Mike Downey of the Los Angeles Times, for his sensitivity to violence against women in his sports reporting.

In recognition of his years of volunteer services, Jack King Wallin, former Garden Grove parks and recreation superintendent, has been named Citizen of the Year by Garden Grove Elks Lodge 1952.

Orange resident Robert Alexander Duthie McVey Reoch, a mortgage broker and past chairman of the United Scottish Society of Southern California, has been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II.

Reoch was chieftain of the recent annual Highland Games in Costa Mesa, which drew about 50,000 people, and has been active in the wider British community.

He helped form the United Scottish Society, the main focus for the 100,000 Scottish community in Southern California.
