East Valley All-Stars to Vie in Football

Sixty-four seniors from 27 high schools in the greater East Valley area will compete in the third Burbank-Glendale all-star football game at 7:30 tonight at St. Francis High.

The Burbank team includes players from Alemany, Bell-Jeff, Burbank, Burroughs, Grant, Harvard, L.A. Baptist, Montclair Prep, North Hollywood, Notre Dame, Poly, St. Genevieve, Van Nuys and Village Christian.

The Burbank team is coached by Mike Plaisance of Village Christian.

The Glendale team includes players from Crescenta Valley, Eagle Rock, Flintridge Prep, Franklin, Glendale, Hoover, La Canada, Loyola, Marshall, Pater Noster, Ribet Academy, St. Francis and Verdugo Hills.

Glendale High Coach Don Shoemaker will guide the Glendale team.

Glendale leads the series, 1-0-1.

Infielders Matt Henzie and Joe Pence have made commitments to play baseball for The Master’s College next season. Henzie, a second baseman and shortstop, led Village Christian High with a .386 batting average.

Pence was the starting second baseman at Orange Coast College.

Former Hart High golfers Shane O’Brien, Chad Butler and Jason Black have enrolled at College of the Canyons and plan to play for the Cougars’ golf team, Canyons Coach Gary Peterson said. Mike Miller, another Hart senior, plans to attend UCLA.

John Wordin of West Hills will compete in the road race, criterium, time trial and team time trial events at the United States Cycling Federation Nationals in Salt Lake City, July 1-10.

Wordin, 28, will be seeking to qualify for a berth on the U. S. national and world championship teams.

The San Fernando Volleyball Camp, for boys and girls age 12-15, will be held July 8-12 at Chatsworth High. The camp is organized by Chatsworth High girls’ Coach Steve Berk.

Dan Walter, Cal State Northridge’s new diving coach, has been hired to replace Dennis Taylor at the Van Nuys-based Gymnastics Olympica Club, a team that combines diving and gymnastics. Taylor resigned to take a coaching position at Rose Bowl Aquatics in Pasadena.

A weeklong basketball camp for boys and girls from third grade through high school is scheduled for North Hollywood High, July 8-12. Jack Haley, a former UCLA basketball player who also played for the NBA’s New Jersey Nets, heads the camp’s coaching staff.

Jeff Dunlap, the women’s coach at College of the Canyons, also is on staff. Sessions begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m.

Victoria Herazo of Sherman Oaks placed third in the NaturalSport Race Walk last Sunday in Van Nuys. Herazo finished the 10-kilometer walk in 47 minutes 15 seconds.

Debbie Lawrence of Kenosha, Wis., was first in 45:58.
