Yorba Linda Eagle Scout Gets $3,000 Scholarship

David G. Alleman of Yorba Linda was one of three Eagle Scouts from across the country to be awarded a $3,000 scholarship by an endowment from former Texas Gov. William P. Clements.

About 1,700 Eagle Scouts submitted applications for the awards program, which recognizes a “superb record of accomplishments” during their time as a Scout.

A national Eagle Scout review committee determines the number and size of scholarships each year to deserving Eagle Scouts graduating from high school who have demonstrated leadership ability and have a record of participation in activities outside of Scouting.

Alleman, 18, an Esperanza High School graduate who received his Eagle rank in June, 1990, plans to attend Brigham Young University and major in physical therapy.

New tutor graduates of the Central Orange County Literacy Council’s English as a second language program are Sharyl R. Bean, Anaheim; Shiela Beemer, Santa Ana; Jim C. Donoghue, Seal Beach; Fred K. Gillen, Westminster; Lou Hadly and Nancy J. Hadly, Huntington Beach; Marjorie Hale, Garden Grove; Eduardo Hermelin, Cerritos; Lawrence V. Hernandez, Santa Fe Springs; Marion Z. Miller, Orange, and Janette R. Schaefer, Irvine.

For his contributions to the county legal community, lawyer Robert S. Barnes has been awarded the Orange County Bar Assn.’s Harmon G. Scoville Award.

A Stanford University graduate, the Corona del Mar resident has been president of the Bar Assn. and is credited with helping establish a federal court in the county.

The award was named in honor of Scoville, who retired last year as presiding justice of the 4th District Court of Appeal in Orange County.

Katie Michels, a senior at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, has been named to participate in the Aug. 11-21 Knowledge and Social Responsibility Program, a 10-day leadership seminar at UC Irvine.

The Fountain Valley resident and 48 other students chosen statewide will discuss and explore such themes as global conflicts, leadership and intercultural understanding.

A country-style radio ad for the Antelope Valley Fair and Alfalfa Festival earned Jill Lloyd & Associates of Santa Ana top honors in its class in the 19th Annual Clarion Competition, a communications awards program sponsored by Women in Communications Inc.

William C. Winter, Fullerton city manager, has been presented the Public Service Award for Outstanding Public Administrator by the Orange County chapter of the American Assn. of Public Administrators.

San Clemente resident Robert R. Crittendon, director of communications for Beckman Instruments Inc., was presented the Excel Award, the highest recognition given to non-members by the Orange County chapter of the International Assn. of Business Communicators.

The award is given to someone who “consistently fostered effective communications practices as well as supported the profession and those who practice it.”

He has been with Beckman since 1959.

A surprise party for Kristin and Larry Ball of Santa Ana celebrated their work directing the music department at First Presbyterian Church of Orange since 1966.

Many of those attending the couple’s party were former students who now are professional musicians, conductors, performing artists, studio musicians and composers.

He is also the chorale director for Rancho Santiago College in Santa Ana. She is organist for the Pacific Symphony in the Performing Arts Center.

The team of Cypress College students Roxanne Berryman and Heather Lizotte won first-place honors with their research presentation “Geriatrics and Drugs--Meant to Help, Not Harm” at the Student American Dental Hygienists Assn. national convention in Orlando, Fla.

Berryman of Torrance and Lizotte of Long Beach each received a plaque and $250. They competed against 24 other teams, including major four-year universities.

A team from the Unviersity of Nebraska took second place; an Ohio State University team won third place.
