The Raiders opened training camp Sunday, earlier than any other NFL team. Apparently, they want to lead the league in draft choices signed, too.

The Raiders have reached contract terms with all but two selections, first-round pick quarterback Todd Marinovich and second-round tailback Nick Bell, having signed eighth-round choices, line backers Brian Jones and Todd Woulard; ninth-round defensive back Tahaun Lewis; 10th-round tight end Andrew Glover, and 12th-round receiver Dennis Johnson. Coach Art Shell said he is optimistic Marinovich and Bell will sign before today’s first practice.

The Raiders don’t have a quarterback under contract, Marinovich joining unsigned veterans Steve Beuerlein, Jay Schroeder and Vince Evans. Schroeder and Evans are not expected in camp until veterans report July 12. Beuerlein, a summer-long holdout in 1990, is expected to report with the rookies this week to work out the kinks of a season during which he did not appear in uniform.

“Todd and Steve are supposed to be close,” Shell said of their contract status. “I don’t know what close means.”

Beuerlein was so close, according to his roommate, that he packed his bags Sunday and headed to Oxnard with his agent.

Raider Notes

Some veterans will work out this week, including linebacker Winston Moss, acquired in an off-season trade with Tampa Bay, cornerbacks Garry Lewis and Torin Dorn, running back Napoleon McCallum and linebacker Aaron Wallace. . . . Greg Townsend’s five-year, $6.6-million contract includes a weight clause that will award him as much as $100,000 per season if he can pare down to 260 pounds before the season opener. Townsend reportedly can lose money if he doesn’t make weight. . . . The Raiders will practice once today and begin two-a-day workouts Tuesday. Veterans report Friday night.
