La Mesa’s Carpenter Wins at Track Cycling Nationals

La Mesa’s Ken Carpenter defeated Paul Swift of Kenosha, Wis., two rides to none, to win the men’s sprint finals Friday at the U.S. Track Cycling Nationals in Redmond, Wash.

Third-place went to Marty Nothstein of Trexlertown, Pa., who beat Trevor Silvera of Westbury, N.Y., two to none.

In the women’s races, San Diego’s Esther Davis finished in seventh place with six points, 23 points behind winner Karen Bliss of Quakertown, Pa.

GOLF

San Diego’s Michael Ruiz and Chris Riley carded third-round 73s and tied for eighth place at the 6,813-yard Las Vegas Founders Legacy Junior Tournament at the Legacy Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.

Ruiz and Riley scored 6-over 222s in the boys’ 15-18 division.

Anthony Rodriguez (209) of San Antonio, Tex., beat Joe Acosta of Visalia, Calif. on the second playoff hole.

Brian Smock of Chula Vista (228) tied for 27th.

BOWLING

John Mazza of Mount Clemens, Mich., overtook San Diego’s Jess Stayrook after the sixth round of the $125,000 PBA Tucson Open.

Mazza, who began the day in third place, totaled 9,856 pins through 42 games. He’s trying to become the first player to win four titles this year.

Stayrook, the leader entering the day, slipped to fifth place with 9,634 pins. He captured his second victory earlier this year at the Flagship City Open in Erie, Pa.

The top five compete in today’s stepladder finals. First prize is $18,000.
