AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Glendale Seizes Lead in Division With 13-10 Victory Over Sun Valley

Glendale took the lead in the American Legion District 20 Eastern Division with a literally hard-fought 13-10 win over Sun Valley on Saturday at Glendale High.

Glendale (18-5), which entered the day tied with Sun Valley, overcame an 8-4 deficit by combining eight singles for nine seventh-inning runs.

The inning included a bench-clearing brawl, which occurred after Glendale’s Rob Walley scored the inning’s sixth run and got tangled up with Sun Valley pitcher Jake Loveridge, who was backing up home plate.

Lance Evans drove in three runs for Glendale, and John Aguilar and Brendan Barrett each had two runs batted in.

Sun Valley fell to 16-6.

Later Saturday, Kevin Roach drove in four runs, three with a fifth-inning homer, in Glendale’s 15-4 win over Eagle Rock in a game at Occidental College called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

In other District 20 games:

Agoura-Oak Park 11, Woodland Hills West 6--Chris Lehman hit his third home run in as many games to spark Agoura-Oak Park at El Camino Real High.

Lehman, who hit a three-run seventh-inning home run in a 5-4 win over Chatsworth on Wednesday, also doubled and drove in two runs.

Brian Spina had three hits and Zach Sterling (four runs batted in), Art Kahn and Ed Gillis each had two hits for Agoura-Oak Park (14-8).

Jeff Gibbons (6-2) went the distance to pick up his sixth consecutive win.

Woodland Hills East 5-4, Las Virgenes 3-6--David Jacobs and Alex Armacost drove in three runs with back-to-back first-inning doubles in the second game, giving Las Virgenes a split at Calabasas High.

Las Virgenes combined four second-inning singles for three additional runs, then held on as Woodland Hills East scored once in the second inning and three times in the fifth.

Sean Collins of Woodland Hills East was two for four with two RBIs and teammate Michael Krasner was two for three.

In the first game, Benji Belfield, Jason Biller and Greg Zutler each had two hits, backing Darnell Hendricks’ seven-hitter.

Belfield had the key hit, a fifth-inning triple that scored Matt Allison. John Erganian’s ground out drove in Belfield, giving Woodland Hills East (11-11) a 4-1 lead.

Encino-Crespi 13, Reseda 3--Encino-Crespi combined 11 hits and three walks for 11 eighth-inning runs at Reseda High, assuring itself of at least a tie for the Southern Division championship.

Joe Turner was two for three with three RBIs and three runs, including the go-ahead two-run single in the eighth.

Phillip Aghajanian (8-0) pitched a complete game for Encino-Crespi, allowing six hits and three unearned runs.

Reseda starter and loser Jesse Yeomans retired 15 consecutive batters until allowing a seventh-inning run.

Granada Hills West 25, West Hills 2--Designated hitter Brian Basowski drove in five runs with a bases-loaded, first-inning walk, a two-run, second-inning single and a two-run double in the third inning in a game at Granada Hills called after seven innings because of the 10-run rule.

Scott Berger and Mike Petruzates each added four RBIs and Rob Rundquist slugged a three-run homer as Granada Hills West improved to 17-6.

San Fernando 12, Chatsworth 2--Dereck Ornelas went four for five with seven RBIs and James Encinas pitched an eight-hitter, striking out five at San Fernando High.

Van Nuys-Notre Dame 10, Burbank South 0--Vinnie Orlando drove in three runs in a game at Notre Dame High called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Van Nuys-Notre Dame 22, North Hollywood 3--Orlando had four RBIs and Lou Tapia and Eric Vellozzi added three each in a game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

North Hollywood’s Adrian Perez was three for three with two RBIs.

Woodland Hills West d. Granada Hills East (forfeit)--Granada Hills was charged with the loss because it had only seven players.

DISTRICT 16

Westlake-Royal 26, Conejo B 1--Westlake-Royal scored five times in the first and six times in the second in the rout at Thousand Oaks High.

Rico Lagattuta (1-0) pitched the first six innings, allowing one hit and striking out nine.

Dave Brown and Rich Naranjo each had four hits and three RBIs for Westlake-Royal (19-5).
