Cindy Kuragami of Buena Park, a second-team Times Orange County girls’ tennis selection this past season, won the gold medal in mixed doubles Tuesday. She and teammate Heath Montgomery of Santa Barbara defeated Michael Hopkinson of Indianapolis and Jenny Baker of Mentor, Ohio, 6-4, 6-4.

Kuragami, who will attend Yale this fall, and Montgomery, a high school junior, played together for the first time at the Festival.

“I thought it would be really hard, but we got along really well,” Kuragami said.

“We both clicked real easily,” Montgomery said. “We both like net play, and we’re both very aggressive and take charge at the net.”

Kuragami, who had a 191-1 regular-season match record and won four Orange League titles in four years at Savanna High, lost in the singles consolation semifinals Tuesday, 6-2, 6-3, to Baker.

Kuragami and Maribel Amadeo of Puerto Rico will play for the women’s doubles bronze medal tonight against Sonya Olejar of Tacoma, Wash., and Lee-Ann Rostovsky of La Jolla.
