HUNTINGTON BEACH : Lifeguard Trainees Will Compete Today
About 1,200 lifeguard trainees will hit the city beach today to compete in the 1991 California Junior Lifeguard Championships.
The competition is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the beach near Huntington Street. There is no admission charge for the event, which is expected to attract about 2,500 spectators, said David Simcox, Huntington Beach’s Junior Lifeguard coordinator.
The participants will enter events in four age-group divisions, ranging from 9 to 17, and compete in nine contests, including relay and individual swimming races, a long-distance run along the beach and a paddleboard race.
The competitors are from 22 summer lifeguard programs from Santa Cruz to San Diego, in which they learn skills such as ocean safety, first aid, surfing and bodyboarding.
The top three finishers in each group and individual event will earn medals. The first-place overall winners will be invited to represent the state at the Junior Lifeguard Nationals, scheduled for Aug. 7 on the beach of Lake Michigan in Chicago.
