PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Shell Says Team Is Ready for a Game

Share

After last week’s sloppy scrimmage at Oxnard High, Coach Art Shell wasn’t sure his team was ready for a game. Saturday, the Raiders will have no choice. They face the San Francisco 49ers in an exhibition at the Coliseum.

Shell said the Raiders have made up a lot of ground since last week. “I think we’re ready to play,” he said. “I think we’re ready to play an exhibition game. Last week our guys were jumping (offside) like jack rabbits.”

Shell still hasn’t decided on a quarterback rotation for the game, although a safe bet would be Jay Schroeder followed by Vince Evans, then Steve Beuerlein.

Beuerlein has not played in a game since the end of the 1989 season. He was embroiled in a bitter holdout last summer and was effectively benched for the entire season. “Someone just showed me one of my new football cards,” Beuerlein said. “It said: ‘Missed entire 1990 season with injury.’ I don’t remember getting hit. “

Defensive end Anthony Smith, who missed last season because of a knee injury, suffered a bruised back in Wednesday’s practice when 315-pound guard Todd Peat fell on him. Smith’s status for Saturday’s game is questionable.
