BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Fetters’ Woes Spark Talk of Fernando

Share

Mike Fetters’ loss to Detroit Thursday might mean the return of Fernando Valenzuela for a second shot at winning the fifth spot in the starting rotation.

Fetters is winless in his two starts, but Manager Doug Rader said Thursday it would be “inappropriate right now” to say whether Fetters will get another start.

Valenzuela won his first start for triple-A Edmonton on Tuesday after splitting two games for double-A Midland. He was 0-2 with a 12.15 earned-run average with the Angels before a heart problem put him on the disabled list. He was released July 5 but re-signed to a minor league contract July 12. His new contract contains a stipulation that he will become a free agent if he is not promoted to the major league roster within a month of his first start, July 19.

Mike Marshall, who worked out with the Angels in Detroit, said he hasn’t been told if he will be signed to a major league contract today, as is expected. Marshall signed a minor league agreement last Friday but was brought in as insurance after Luis Polonia injured his left shoulder last weekend. “I don’t know if they’re going to activate me (today) or wait until next week,” he said. . . . The Angels have had four winning trips, two losing trips and one .500 trip, this just-completed journey to Baltimore, New York, Cleveland and Detroit. . . . Dave Parker has hit in nine of his past 10 games and is 17 for 45 during that span. . . . The Angels were swept in a series for the first time since July 5-7 at Texas. . . . Since mid-April, the Tigers have held only one team to three runs or fewer in two consecutive games. That team? The Angels--twice.
