BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Winfield Gives Twins Credit

Although Dave Winfield said early this season he didn’t think the Twins had the best team in the AL West, he was more than willing Tuesday to acknowledge their accomplishments.

“I was quoted as saying they wouldn’t win, but if they do, you’ve got to give them all the credit in the world,” he said. “But it ain’t over. They’re going to know they’ve been in a pennant race.”

While Winfield may have underestimated the Twins, former Angel Chili Davis looks like a prophet after saying in April the Twins would overcome their 3-9 start and become contenders.

“I’ve been around this game long enough not to judge teams on names, to say, ‘They’re going to win because they have these names who make X amount of dollars,’ ” Davis said. “You could see the character here, the closeness in this team, and it also has the names.”

Catcher Lance Parrish said he hasn’t been fined or sanctioned by the American League office for calling Rick Reed “a horrible umpire,” who “didn’t deserve to be an umpire.” Said Parrish, “Maybe they haven’t gotten around to it yet.” . . . Rod Carew became the fourth player inducted into the Angels’ Hall of Fame, joining Bobby Grich, Don Baylor and Jim Fregosi. Team President Richard Brown was booed when he was introduced during the pregame ceremonies.
