Encino’s Steinbeck Wins Title in Junior Tennis Tournament

Second-seeded Dean Steinbeck of Encino defeated top-seeded Mark Ellis of Camarillo, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6, on Friday to win the boys’ 18-year-old division of the Warner Center junior tennis tournament in Woodland Hills.

In the boys’ 16 division, top-seeded Chris Minor of Northridge defeated Dvir Levy of Tarzana, 6-4, 6-2. In the boys’ 12 division, Golan Sassoon of Reseda defeated Teng-Y Liao of Upland, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1.

In the boys’ 10 division, second-seeded Joey Edelberg of Agoura defeated top-seeded Mark Carruthers of Marina del Rey, 6-1, 6-2.

St. Genevieve High is planning to honor the members of its first Southern Section championship football team, the 1966 squad. Any members of that team, or anyone knowing the whereabouts of any member of that team, should contact Richard Fong at the school at 818-894-6417.

The school also is forming a varsity football alumni club. All former team members are invited to join. Any former varsity football letterman can contact Fong at the school.

Brad Sherfy of Camarillo shot rounds of 76-82--158 and missed the 36-hole cut at the 73rd PGA Championship, played at the 7,289-yard, par-72 Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.

Sherfy is a teaching pro at Woodley Lakes Golf Course in Van Nuys. The cut was 148.
