The Baltimore Orioles have that sinking feeling, and for one night, they were able to transfer some of it to the Chicago White Sox.

Leo Gomez, hitless in his previous 14 at-bats, hit a one-out homer in the 11th inning Monday night to give the Orioles a 5-4 victory over the White Sox at Baltimore.

The White Sox seemed headed for a four-game sweep when Baltimore’s Chris Hoiles hit a solo homer off Bobby Thigpen in the ninth to tie the score, 4-4.

“We needed a win no matter if it happened in the bottom of the first or bottom of the ninth,” Oriole Manager John Oates said. “A lot of things were going bad and you could start feeling it. We needed a win to get that winning attitude back.”

The victory ended Baltimore’s five-game losing streak, stopped Chicago’s seven-game winning string and dropped the White Sox two games behind the leading Minnesota Twins in the West.

Gregg Olson (2-4) got the last two outs in the 11th after a double by Robin Ventura, whose run-scoring single gave the White Sox a 4-3 lead in the eighth.

Chicago’s Jack McDowell bid for his 15th victory was thwarted when Thigpen blew a save for the seventh time in 33 chances.

Seattle 6, Oakland 3--Jay Buhner homered twice and drove in four runs at Seattle as the Mariners broke the Athletics’ six-game winning streak.

Buhner hit a solo homer in the second inning off Bob Welch (10-7) and added a two-run shot, his 23rd, to make it 4-1 in the seventh. Buhner has seven home runs in his last 11 games.

Rich DeLucia (10-7) held the A’s hitless until Terry Steinbach homered in the fifth. Mike Gallego hit a two-run homer in the eighth.

Boston 11, Toronto 8--Roger Clemens was routed early, but the Red Sox rallied to beat the Blue Jays and complete a four-game sweep at Toronto.

Toronto has lost five in a row and 15 of 22, shaving its East lead to 3 1/2 games over idle Detroit.

Jack Clark drove in four runs as the Red Sox beat Toronto for the sixth time in seven games and closed to within seven games.

Clemens gave up seven runs, five earned, in 4 1/3 innings. But the Red Sox overcame a 7-5 deficit with a four-run sixth inning against Duane Ward (5-4), highlighted by Clark’s two-run single.

Milwaukee 14, Texas 7--Darryl Hamilton extended his hitting streak to 17 games and drove in three runs as the Brewers routed the Rangers at Arlington, Tex.
