El Camino Names Shaw as Assistant Basketball Coach

Share

Redondo High basketball Coach Steve Shaw has been named an assistant coach at El Camino College and former El Camino standout LeValley Pattison has been selected women’s volleyball coach, an El Camino representative said this week.

Mary Ann Keating, El Camino director of public information, said that Shaw and Pattison will be approved Monday by the school’s board of trustees.

Shaw, a former El Camino and Aviation High basketball standout, will assist Paul Landreaux, who returns to El Camino this fall after a three-year leave of absence that included a two-year stint as coach at St. Mary’s College. Because the assistant’s job is part-time, Shaw will remain a teacher at Redondo.

Shaw coached Redondo for six seasons, guiding the Sea Hawks to four berths in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs. They were 15-14 last season and won two playoff games. Four of the top six players return from that team.

Early speculation on a replacement for Shaw has centered on two former area high school coaches--Cliff Warren, who coached Rolling Hills to a 123-46 record from 1986-91, and Redondo graduate Jon Fowler, who coached North Torrance last season before resigning.

Pattison, who played on El Camino’s last state championship volleyball team in 1984, has a strong background as a player and coach. She was an All-CIF setter at Mira Costa High and has been a member of the pro beach tour since 1985. She has worked as an assistant coach at Mira Costa and Pepperdine and formerly was coach of the South Bay Volleyball Club.
