Cherry to Attend Community College

San Diego State Basketball Coach Jim Brandenburg announced on Monday that local recruit Darnell Cherry did not meet NCAA eligibility requirements and confirmed that transfer Tony Clark will undergo back surgery today.

Cherry, a 6-foot-6 freshman swing man from Morse High, will instead enroll in a community college, Brandenburg said.

Clark’s surgery--to repair a disk problem in his lower back--will take place at Mercy Hospital by Dr. Richard Ostrup.

Michael Welch, a coach at Helix High for four years before becoming an assistant at San Diego State this spring, has been named the interim coach at Morehead State for the 1991 season, which begins Saturday.
