Chatsworth Finds a Place for Greentree : Prep basketball: School hires former Marshall coach into a teaching position, enabling him to guide program.

After weeks in administrative limbo, Sandy Greentree has been hired as a teacher at Chatsworth High and will coach the boys’ basketball team in 1991-92.

Greentree coached Chatsworth in summer-league play and during the L. A. Watts Games. He was first expected to be formally installed as the Chancellors’ walk-on coach while remaining a teacher at Birmingham but was unable to gain afternoon release time from Birmingham.

Greentree, 35, who led Marshall High to the City Section 3-A Division title in 1985-86, will teach special education at Chatsworth. Marshall was 104-45 in Greentree’s seven seasons as coach.

“This should work out pretty well,” said Greentree, a 1978 graduate of Cal State Northridge.

Greentree taught for one year at Birmingham and spent the previous 12 years at Marshall. He replaces Gary Shair, 54, who resigned after 21 years at Chatsworth in protest over the year-round calendar, which took effect this month in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Chatsworth was 6-13 last season and finished third in West Valley League play at 3-7.

Greentree coached at Marshall from 1979-86 and left coaching after winning the 3-A title, citing burnout.

Chatsworth is expected to rank among the best 3-A Division teams in the area. Several experienced players return for the Chancellors, including 6-foot-7 center Brady Mertes, all-league point guard Christen Dunbar and forward Chan Manor.
