PREP FOOTBALL ’91 / GARDEN GROVE LEAGUE : La Quinta

OUTLOOK

Takahashi, one of the best high school coaches in the county, took the Aztecs to the league title and Southern Section Division VI quarterfinals last year. But he might have his work cut out for him this season. La Quinta returns only one starter on offense (Schwenk) and must replace quarterback Donald Hopkins, who threw for 1,992 yards last season, with the inexperienced Kenny Granger or Ryan Powell. Granger was the backup quarterback last season and Powell is up from the junior varsity. Takahashi said he probably will go to the running game with Berg and Boulton early in the season until the Aztecs can establish a passing attack. But he is excited about the size of his team. “Our weight at the lines last year was 170-175 and this year is up to 190, maybe 200,” Takahashi said. “If we don’t give up too much quickness, we’ll be OK. . . . I’d like to see us optimistically battling for one of the top three spots (in the league).”
