PREP FOOTBALL ’91 : ORANGE LEAGUE : Magnolia

OUTLOOK

Magnolia will need to find help quickly if it hopes to improve on last year’s finish. With only five starters back from last year’s 1-8 team, Friedrich is cautious about expectations of his team. “I think we should be better than we were last year,” he said. “We didn’t throw the ball well at all. I think we should be better in that department this year. Our receivers are bigger and faster.” It will be up to Turner to get them the ball. Friedrich said he has no hesitations about turning over the leadership responsibilities to an inexperienced sophomore. “He’s a great kid with a great arm,” Friedrich said. “He’s young, and he’ll make a few mistakes.” Experience aside, Friedrich likes the attitude of his team. “We’re stronger physically, but also mentally,” he said. “Last year we had some morale problems. We had to give up 100 points before we straightened out.” Magnolia’s strength will be in its line, which is loaded with size, strength and experience with Avalos, Reguejo and Houser. Matthews, who moved up from the freshman team, will contribute size on the offensive line. McCowan is Magnolia’s most experienced back, and will start at fullback.
