Torero Soccer Team Wins Opener From UCSB
Players from area high schools had a banner Saturday for University of San Diego’s men’s soccer team, which scored a 1-0 nonconference victory over UC Santa Barbara in the season opener at Torero Stadium.
Hilltop High graduate Chugger Adair scored the game’s only goal, a second-half header, off an assist from Poway’s Kevin Legg.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tom Tate, who played at University of San Diego High School, faced only three shots and recorded his 10th career shutout.
UC Santa Barbara is 0-1.
CROSS-COUNTRY
USD opened the cross-country season at the Loyola Marymount Invitational in fine form. The men (65 points) finished second to LMU (51) and the women (97) third to Pepperdine (37) and Santa Clara (88).
The men had four runners--all juniors--finish in the top 15: Jeff Ertwin (7th), Matt Young (9th), Gabe Vaca (12th) and Bill Clark (13th).
The best finisher for USD was freshman Jennifer McCann, who took third in the women’s race, clocking 20 minutes 34 seconds over five kilometers. Seniors Erin Kelly and Patty Rosen, both seniors, finished 17th and 18th.
MEN’S WATER POLO
Defending champion Navy and rival Air Force ended the first day of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational with 2-0 records. UCSD split its games, beating UC Davis, 11-4, and falling to Air Force, 7-5. The round-robin tournament concludes today. Air Force and Navy play at 2 p.m. at UCSD’s Canyonview Pool.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Former Poway High standout Heather Collins had 13 kills to help UC Santa Barbara to a 15-11, 10-15, 15-5, 15-10 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference victory over San Diego State (3-3). Collins, the county’s Division I player of the year, was second in kills to Ana Alisa Franca’s 14. UCSB is (1-1)
SDSU got 22 kills from Gracie Schutt and 13 from Jennifer Miller.
Andrea Bruns had 19 kills to lead USD to a 15-8, 9-15, 15-13, 15-8 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, ensuring a split of two matches at the Cal State Northridge Invitational.
Jennifer Lofftus had 14 kills, Nikki Wallace 13 and Maria Rickard 10 against San Luis Obispo (4-3).
In the second match, UC Irvine (1-1) defeated USD in three games, 15-10, 15-12, 15-10. Bruns led USD (5-2) with nine kills.
Fresno Pacific, ranked second in the NAIA preseason poll, defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 15-11, 15-13, 15-12, in the semifinals of the Holiday Inn/Airport Invitational at Fresno. PLNC (6-4), ranked ninth, dropped the third-place game to Humboldt State, 15-10, 15-10, 15-9.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore goalkeeper Lorena Snyder made seven saves as SDSU defeated the University of San Francisco, 1-0, in the season-opener for both schools. Laura Schlom scored for SDSU.
SURFING
Brad Gerlach of Encinitas, ranked second on the World Tour, was eliminated by San Clemente’s Matt Archbold from the $50,000 Body Glove Surf Bout IV at Lower Trestles at Camp Pendleton.
Others advancing to today’s final three rounds are Cardiff’s Colin Smith and Rob Machado. The finals are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
