Booth Captures the Title in Surfing Competition

Share

After winning the $50,000 Body Glove Surf Bout IV on Sunday, Laguna Beach’s Jeff Booth accepted his $20,200 check and offered an apology to the crowd at Lower Trestles in San Clemente.

“I’m feeling a bit guilty right now,” he said.

With the victory, Booth, a regular on the Assn. of Surfing Professionals’ world tour, became the first surfer to win two events on the California-based Professional Surfing Assn. of America tour. He was the only one of 10 world-tour competitors to reach the four-man finals Sunday.

“I feel guilty because I’ve won so much money on the tour this year,” said Booth, who won a PSAA contest in Oceanside in June. “Being on the ASP, then coming to California, it’s sort of like I came into town and Robin-Hooded the other guys.”

It was hardly a case of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Booth’s win pushed his PSAA earnings to $26,000, the most on the tour.

“I think this was the most competitive contest in PSAA history,” Booth said. “Having guys like Richie Collins, Derek Ho and Brad Gerlach here made it a tough contest. And the local guys were laying down the law, too.”

MEN’S SOCCER

Brian Craft-Negrete scored two goals and San Diego State broke a 1-1 halftime tie to beat visiting San Jose State, 3-1, and improve to 2-0. Bill Demke broke the tie with the other Aztecs goal at the 55:10 mark. The Spartans are 1-2.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cheryl Parker, Karin Lindsay and Katy Dulock each had two goals in UC San Diego’s 6-0 rout over Macalester, the team that eliminated the Tritons in the first round of the 1990 Division III regional. Lindsay also had two assists in 10th ranked UCSD’s season opener at home.

After a scoreless first half, Washington got goals from Rhonda Klein and Amy Hamamoto and defeated SDSU, 2-0. The host Aztecs slipped to 1-1.

WATER POLO

The return of 1989 All-American Jason Brown, who redshirted in 1990, meant two victories for UCSD in the second and final day of the Triton Invitational. Brown had six goals as UCSD defeated Claremont, 18-5, and Navy, 12-7.
