CERRITOS — Michael Lund scored twice to help Servite High School defeat Alemany, 31-23, in the Friars’ nonleague opener Friday at Gahr High School.
Lund also gained 104 of Servite’s 166 rushing yards in 11 carries.
Servite led Alemany, 10-7, when Lund scored on a 13-yard pass from Josh Nelson with 9 minutes 17 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The drive covered 68 yards in six plays. His second score was a 29-yard run around the right end with 6:34 left in the third quarter.
Nelson completed five of six pass attempts for 125 yards. He also completed a 27-yard pass to Ryan Dodd for Servite’s first touchdown with 3:13 left in the first quarter.
Servite’s defense, led by Matt Finch, held Alemany to 41 yards rushing. Finch sacked Alemany quarterback Adam Romandi twice and assisted on a third.
Early in the second quarter, Servite’s Nelson completed a 52-yard pass to Julian Jones, who fumbled at the Alemany 18. Alemany’s Travis Russell recovered the fumble, and five consecutive first downs advanced the Indians to the Servite 17.
Five plays later, however, Servite’s Jason Gonchar recovered a Romandi fumble at the 8-yard line.
Elphamous Malbrue gained 51 yards in 11 carries, scored on a three-yard run and recorded a two-point conversion for Servite.
