Newhall Hart 32, Canyon Country Canyon 27--Senior quarterback Ryan Connors directed Hart’s new no-huddle, run and shoot offense by completing 22 of 42 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Indians at College of the Canyons.

Canyon sophomore running back Ed Williams, who rushed for 204 yards, had a chance to give the Cowboys the lead but fumbled on the Hart six-yard line with just 2:08 to play.

Oxnard Rio Mesa 35, Channel Islands 13--Senior tailback Tony Gray rushed for 50 yards in eight carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Spartans in a rout at home.

Senior tailback Gordy Abellera put Rio Mesa on the scoreboard first on a 21-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The Spartans took a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter on Gray’s four-yard run capped an eight-play, 66-yard drive.

Senior wide receiver Swanson Nunnery, who had four catches for 132 yards, caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Contreras to give Rio Mesa a 21-0 lead at halftime.

Gray added touchdown runs of one yard in the third quarter and 29 yards in the fourth quarter as Rio Mesa rolled up 343 yards in total offense.

Channel Islands added two scores in the fourth quarter on halfback David Cox’s six-yard touchdown run and quarterback Cesar Puga’s six-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Chris Weist.

Contreras completed 11 of 15 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown.

Pasadena Muir 34, Palmdale 8--Muir shredded Palmdale for 245 yards rushing at Pasadena City College.

Quarterback Andy Colbert led the attack with 80 yards in 13 carries and one touchdown. Running back Linza Williams added two touchdowns on runs of 17 and four yards. Williams finished with 36 yards in seven carries. Ian Jewett, a sophomore outside linebacker from Palmdale, sustained a neck injury with 8:04 left in the third quarter and was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena.

The extent of the injury was not known, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

San Diego Lincoln 12, Dorsey 6--The Dons were held to only 128 total yards and Marlon Scott scored two one-yard touchdowns to lead Lincoln at Mesa College.

Carson 45, Leuzinger 6--Wingback Theron Hill tied a Carson school record with four touchdown runs and quarterback Jamie Sander passed for 176 yards and two touchdowns in his varsity debut.

Carson opened a 45-0 lead in the first half while holding Leuzinger to two yards total. Hill rushed for 82 yards in 11 carries and Sander completed 12 of 17 passes, including his first seven attempts. Carson, defending City 4-A Division champions, won its first game under new co-coaches Marty Blankenship and Jim D’Amore.

Gardena 13, Jefferson 6--Jefferson senior running back Tony Thomas rushed for 105 yards in 19 carries, but it was not enough to help the Democrats in their season opener at Gardena.

Thomas was one of the leading rushers in the City last season with 1,200 yards.

Manual Arts 25, Crenshaw 20--Running back Michael Capers scored the winning touchdown on a 27-yard run in the fourth quarter to lift the Toilers in their opener at Crenshaw.

Capers finished with 127 yards in 12 carries. He also scored on a 36-yard touchdown.

Grant 17, Verdugo Hills 14--Adam Rose rushed for 88 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns to pace host Grant to a come-from-behind victory.
