Rio Mesa 35, Channel Islands 13-Senior tailback Tony Gray rushed for 50 yards in eight carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Spartans in a rout at home.

Senior tailback Gordy Abellera put Rio Mesa on the scoreboard first on a 21-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The Spartans took a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter on Gray’s four-yard run that capped an eight-play, 66-yard drive.

Senior wide receiver Swanson Nunnery, who had four catches for 132 yards, caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Andy Contreras to give Rio Mesa a 21-0 lead at halftime.

Gray added touchdown runs of one yard in the third quarter and 29 yards in the fourth quarter as Rio Mesa rolled up 343 yards in total offense.

Channel Islands added two scores in the fourth quarter on halfback David Cox’s six-yard touchdown run and quarterback Cesar Puga’s six-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Chris Weist.

Contreras completed 11 of 15 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown.
