COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Loyola Volleyball Team Wins Title at UC Irvine Invitational

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team defeated UC Irvine, 15-5, 16-14, 11-15, 16-14, and won the UC Irvine invitational Saturday night.

The Lions earlier defeated Idaho, 15-7, 15-5, 15-8. On Friday, Loyola lost to Florida State, 18-16, 13-15, 20-18, 11-15, 17-15, in a match that took 2 hours 54 minutes to complete.

Loyola, UC Irvine and Florida State finished with 2-1 records, but the Lions won the title on a tiebreaker. Loyola had a better overall game record (8-4) than the other teams.

Three Loyola players were named to the all-tournament team: junior Joli Eberhart, who also was the tournament’s most valuable player, sophomore Deanna Doolittle and freshman Robin Ortgiesen of Mira Costa High.

The Lions open their home season on Tuesday against 20th-ranked San Diego State.

Gerardo Yepez, Keith Martin and Mike Hall each scored goals leading Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 3-1 nonconference soccer victory over host Southern California College Saturday.

Toro goalie Erick Miseroy made four saves and had his shutout spoiled when sophomore forward Carlos Miramontes scored on a penalty kick with five minutes to play.
