Rolling Hills Expected to Name Warren as Coach

Share

Cliff Warren, who in the past six years helped Rolling Hills High become one of the South Bay’s most successful basketball programs, has been chosen basketball coach at Redondo High, according to sources.

Redondo will officially name Warren to the position within the next few days, sources said. He replaces Steve Shaw, who resigned to become an assistant at El Camino College. Warren will coach on a walk-on basis, with Shaw retaining his teaching job at the school.

Basketball coach--Cliff Warren is the new basketball coach at Redondo High.

Warren guided Rolling Hills to a 123-46 record, three Bay League titles and six CIF playoff appearances. He lost his job because of the consolidation of Rolling Hills, Palos Verdes and Miraleste to form Palos Verdes Peninsula High. John Mihaljevich, a longtime coach at Palos Verdes and a teacher in the district, was chosen to head the new school’s basketball program.

Warren was named coach at Harbor College in April, but he resigned a few weeks later after his mother suffered a crippling stroke. Because she was hospitalized in Las Vegas, Warren did not feel he could adequately perform his job at Harbor.

Since then, his mother has been moved to Torrance, where she is receiving care. This has allowed Warren time to coach again, he said this week.

Warren was coach at El Segundo in the 1960s and guided the Eagles to the CIF 2-A Division title in 1963 and the major division final in 1967. He left El Segundo after that season and did not return to high school coaching until the 1985-86 season, when he took over at Rolling Hills. The Titans reached the 3-A Division final in 1987, losing to Saugus.
