Savanna 14, Santiago 13--A six-yard touchdown run by Hieu Nguyen touchdown run with 5:28 to play lifted visiting Savanna to a nonleague victory.

Savanna fell behind early when Santiago cornerback Enele Scanlan intercepted a Brad Belanger pass and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown. The Cavaliers added another touchdown on a nine-yard Geoff Noisy run just a few minutes later to make it 13-0.

Despite driving deep into Santiago territory several times in the first half, turnovers and mistakes kept the Rebels out of the end zone.

Savanna took the opening kickoff in the second half and drove 76 yards for the touchdown, on an 18-yard pass from Brad Belanger to Paul Waldrop.

Despite the missed opportunities in the first half, Savanna Coach Fred De Palma said he was pleased with his team’s effort.

“We were totally outplayed in the first half,” De Palma said. “I told them when they get the opportunity, they have to make the plays. We did that in the second half.”

Santiago did have one last chance to pull the game out, but a 58-yard desperation field-goal attempt by Scanlan with 54 seconds left fell short.

Scanlan also missed a 45-yard field goal wide and hit the cross bar on a 25-yard attempt earlier in the game.
