Quartz Hill High quarterback Jake Haro had two passes intercepted deep in Redlands’ territory in the final three minutes as the Rebels fell Friday night to Redlands, 13-7, in a nonleague game at the University of Redlands.

Quartz Hill (1-1), The Times’ No. 1-ranked team in the region, trailed by six late in the game before marching into Redlands territory. But with 2 minutes 38 seconds remaining, Brian Williams of Redlands intercepted a Haro pass at the 15-yard line.

Quartz Hill then stopped the Terriers (2-0) on downs and regained possession at its own 35 with 1 minute 38 seconds left.

Brian Billings preserved the victory with an interception at the Redlands 10 with 13 seconds to play.

After Redlands built a 13-0 lead, Quartz Hill’s Calvin Liggins scored on a one-yard run with eight minutes left to cut the deficit to 13-7.

Quartz Hill tailback Erik Thomas was held to 50 yards in 12 carries.

“Our defense came up with the opportunities to win the game, but our offense didn’t do its job,” Quartz Hill Coach John Albee said.

Quartz Hill had two apparent touchdowns by Joel Hansen nullified by penalties. His 37-yard interception return was nullified by pass interference, and a 75-yard punt return was wiped out by a clipping call.

Quartz Hill lineman Randy Clemons sustained an injured left ankle in the first quarter and sat out the rest of the game.
