Arizona stayed mostly on the ground in beating Cal State Long Beach, 45-21, Saturday night.

Craig Gilbert, Billy Johnson and Chuck Levy ran for first-half touchdowns for Arizona, and Terry Vaughn added an 83-yard punt-return touchdown, giving the Wildcats (2-2) a 31-14 halftime lead.

Arizona and Long Beach combined for 27 penalties for 251 yards. That set an Arizona school record, breaking the old mark of 23 set with Arizona State in 1960.

For the first time this season, Arizona scored on its first two possessions.

Gilbert’s one-yard dive capped the 80-yard opening drive, and Johnson broke up the middle 40 yards on a delay when Arizona got the ball again.

Levy, getting his first playing time at quarterback, then scored on a three-yard keeper to cap another 80-yard drive before Terrel Davis scored on a 13-yard pitch around left end for the 49ers after a Levy pass was intercepted and returned to the Arizona 29.

After Steve McLaughlin kicked a 27-yard field goal, Vaughn added his punt return and Levy scored on a two-point conversion run.
