The Harbor College football team opened Western State Conference play against L.A. Southwest on Saturday, but the Seahawk offense was missing in action.

Harbor gained only 218 yards against a fierce Southwest defense in a 33-6 loss.

“Today they definitely outplayed us in every phase of the game and I have to congratulate them for that,” Harbor Coach Don Weems said. “(Southwest Coach Henry Washington) always says he wins with defense.”

The Seahawks (0-2) gained only 88 yards in the first half and they had only one drive of more than 35 yards. Harbor’s only touchdown came on a defensive play early in the third quarter.

Southwest quarterback Jesse Wallace fumbled at his own 10-yard line and Harbor defensive back Marvin Green returned the ball for a touchdown.

The Seahawks missed an opportunity to score late in the fourth quarter. They drove 91 yards, but quarterback Steve Young threw an incomplete pass on third and goal from the seven and an interception on fourth and goal.

Young completed six of 18 passes for 61 yards and two interceptions. Mark Choate replaced Young midway through the fourth quarter and completed four of 11 passes for 69 yards and an interception.

“We had an awful game,” Weems said. “Our offense was bad and our defense was horrible.”

Wallace, a converted tailback, used his scrambling ability to keep several plays going. He completed 13 of 24 passes for 153 yards and three touchdowns.

Wallace threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Mike Stephens for Southwest’s first score with 6:12 left in the first quarter.

He passed to Stephens for another touchdown with 6:39 remaining in the second quarter.
