ROUNDUP : Master’s Racks Up 9-2 Victory in Soccer

Bruce Burnham and Momir Horvatek each scored two goals Wednesday to lead The Master’s College to a 9-2 National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 victory over host Cal Baptist in men’s soccer.

The Mustangs (4-6, 4-2 in District 3 play), who led, 4-1, at halftime, had 22 shots on goal against Cal Baptist (5-5-2, 1-1).

MEN’S TENNIS

West Coast Fall championships--Kevin Smith of the University of the Pacific defeated UC Irvine’s Roger Vig, a Chatsworth resident, 6-1, 7-5, in a first-round qualifying match at the Warner Center Club in Woodland Hills.

The qualifying round concludes today, with 16 players advancing to the championship round. The tournament will end Sunday.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Chatsworth d. Reseda, 15-5, 15-11, 12-15, 15-11--Nancy Pasag, Rose Pasag and Gigi Ghattas each had nine kills to lead the Chancellors (3-2, 2-0) to a Valley Conference victory over visiting Reseda.

Tracy Dockery had eight kills for Reseda (0-2 in league play).

Cleveland d. Taft, 15-9, 15-11, 15-6--Janette Penfield had 15 kills and 14 blocks to pace the Cavaliers’ Valley Conference victory over visiting Taft.

Maureen Baldwin added 10 kills and Kristen Riley had 14 blocks for Cleveland (5-0, 2-0).

Saugus d. Hart, 15-3, 15-9, 16-14--Shannon Martin had 12 kills for Hart (1-2) in a nonleague match at Saugus.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Buena 23, Ventura 32--Meghan Ellis finished first with a time of 21 minutes 37 seconds to lead Buena (1-0, 1-0) in a Channel League meet at Arroyo Verde Park. Buena’s Christy Ruffin (21:59) and Miriam Neidnagel (22:08) were second and third.

Rio Mesa 21, Santa Barbara 38; Rio Mesa 24, San Marcos 31--The Spartans (2-2, 2-0) picked up two Channel League victories at Santa Barbara.

Santa Barbara’s Summer Eckberg (20:01) finished first, followed by the Spartans’ Tina Schroyer (20:03) and Tiffany Marra (21:01).

Simi Valley 21, Camarillo 36; Simi Valley 17, Royal 50; Camarillo 20, Royal 50--Senior Rikki Pedersen finished first in 19:56 and senior Liz DiLalla placed second in 20:13 to lead Simi Valley to two Marmonte League victories at Camarillo Grove Park.

Oxnard 24, Dos Pueblos 31; Oxnard 20, Hueneme 39; Dos Pueblos 20, Hueneme 40--Hueneme’s Josephina Sanchez set an Oxnard State Beach course record with a time of 18:46 in a Channel League race. Sanchez broke the record of 19:00 held by Buena’s Karen Hinkel.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Buena 15, Ventura 45--Nathan Jobe finished first in 17:05 for the Bulldogs (1-0, 1-0), whose runners took the first six places.

Behind Jobe were teammates David Guenther (17:20), Steve Hials (17:24), Chris Jimenez (18:01), Dan Swaney (18:26) and David Nutting (18:36).

Rio Mesa 28, San Marcos 28--The Spartans (3-1, 2-0) recorded a victory despite the tied score because Rio Mesa’s sixth runner, Edward Segovia (18:05), finished ahead of San Marcos’ sixth runner.

Cesar Zepeda (16:40) and Kris Hilsabeck (17:13) of Rio Mesa finished second and third, respectively.

Oxnard 24, Dos Pueblos 31; Oxnard 20, Hueneme 39; Dos Pueblos 20, Hueneme 40--Hueneme’s Donald Carmona finished first in a Channel League race at Oxnard State Beach.
