COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : One Good Half Carries Irvine Valley

After a scoreless first half, Irvine Valley College scored three goals in the second half to beat Golden West, 3-0, in an Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer game Friday in Irvine.

Piero Mendiola, Mike Densmore and Mike Sweeney scored for host Irvine Valley (8-1-2, 3-1 in conference play).

It was the first conference loss for Golden West (6-5-2, 1-1-1).

In another Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer game:

Orange Coast 3, Rancho Santiago 0--Scott Goldman scored in the first half and P.J. Plowski and Mak Mitchell scored in the second half as first-place Orange Coast (6-3-1, 3-0-1) continued to do well in conference games. Rancho Santiago is 6-2-1, 1-2.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s soccer:

Orange Coast 3, Cypress 2--Linda Lewin scored the winning goal for Orange Coast (3-5-2, 1-1-1) with 20 minutes remaining in the second half. Noelle Rost and Stacy Darin each scored for Cypress (5-1-1, 2-1-1).

In South Coast Conference water polo:

Golden West 24, El Camino 4--Alfred Van Drop scored six goals as Golden West (16-0, 3-0) won at home.

In Orange Empire Conference water polo:

Orange Coast 18, San Diego Mesa 12--Bill Nickel and Ross McIlwain scored four goals each for visiting Orange Coast (14-3, 3-0).

Cypress 14, Rancho Santiago 6--Ray Schwengel scored four goals and Fred Tinsley, Brian Pickler and Jason Oxley scored three goals each as Cypress (14-6, 1-2) won at home.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Fullerton 0--Tania Grassell and Kalen Hayter had seven kills each as Golden West (4-0, 1-0) rolled past host Fullerton, 15-5, 15-5, 15-6. Fullerton is 5-4, 0-2.

Orange Coast 3, Saddleback 0--Reiko Matsumoto and Bryn Gillis each had seven kills for host Orange Coast (6-1, 2-0).
