Rain Extinguishes 130-Acre Fire Near Santa Paula
A 130-acre brush fire northeast of Santa Paula was extinguished by rain showers Friday night a few hours after it was contained by firefighters, authorities said.
The year’s largest brush fire was started by sparks from an insulator on a 66,000-volt electric power line. It charred an avocado orchard and threatened two houses before it was contained at 4:27 p.m. Friday.
No one was injured, and authorities had no immediate estimate on the value of the property lost.
About 250 firefighters from Ventura and Los Angeles counties fought the blaze. By 6 p.m. Friday, their efforts had reduced the fire to smoldering hot spots.
About 75 firefighters stayed at the fire line Friday night in case the fire flared up, but showers dampened the last few hot spots, said Dennis Miller, a dispatcher for the Ventura County Fire Department. By noon Saturday, the last of the firefighters had left, Miller said.
