UCI Women Finish First at San Luis Obispo Cross-Country Meet

UC Irvine junior Rayna Cervantes won the women’s individual championship at the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Cross-Country Invitational Saturday, leading the Irvine women’s team to a first-place finish.

Irvine scored 47 points, 22 points ahead of second-place Kansas State.

Cervantes ran a time of 17:13 across the 5,000-meter course on the Cal Poly SLO campus. Cervantes finished one second ahead of Kristina Hand of Cal Poly SLO. Irvine sophomore Traci Goodrich and freshman Tiffany York finished eighth and 10th respectively.

The Anteater women are currently ranked 18th in the nation.

Ben Ayers was the top runner for the Irvine men’s team, finishing 15th with a time of 25:00 over five miles. The Anteaters finished fourth with 100 points. The Reebok Aggies won the men’s team championship with 32 points.

Todd Trask of Kansas State was the men’s individual championship, finishing the course in 24:31.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s soccer:

Cal State Bakersfield 3, Chapman 3--Jeff Hudson scored with seven minutes left in overtime giving Chapman (5-7-2, 1-3-1) the tie. Eddie Soto had the Panthers other two goals.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Azusa Pacific 3, Southern California College 1--Lenne Hill had 19 kills and Stacy Goldsberry had 17 for visiting Azusa Pacific (23-6, 7-1), the seventh-ranked team in the NAIA, which won, 9-15, 15-12, 15-7, 15-0. Krista Hoover had 14 kills for SCC (16-11, 3-6).

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Hawaii 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Sophomore Becky Howlett had 10 kills for Cal State Fullerton (6-20, 1-8). Kenyatta Lovelace had 12 kills for Hawaii (14-2, 8-2), which won, 15-13, 15-7, 15-8. Hawaii, ranked fourth in the NCAA, remained in first place in the conference.

San Jose State 3, UC Irvine 2--Dana Chalais had 21 kills, and Scotleen Risley and Wendy Kohler each had 11 for host Irvine (5-11, 1-8), which lost, 15-11, 2-15, 15-8, 14-16, 15-2.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

UC Irvine 2, Westmont 0--The Anteaters (9-5-1) won their fifth consecutive game to break the school’s 1986 record for victories in a single season. Shawna Berke and Carmen Morrell scored Irvine’s goals on assists from Jenni Tanaka.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Southern California College 1, Point Loma Nazarene 0--Costa Koutropoulos, a freshman midfielder from Australia, scored five minutes 25 seconds into the game as the Vanguards (6-9, 2-2) won their second consecutive game and third in their past four. Point Loma Nazarene fell to 1-11, 0-3.

In Big West Conference water polo:

Pepperdine 8, UC Irvine 4--Geoffrey Clark scored seven goals for fifth-ranked Pepperdine (13-4, 4-1). With the victory, the Waves moved into a first-place tie in the conference with third-ranked Irvine (12-3, 4-1).
