Corona del Mar’s Kehrli Has Surgery, Might Miss Season

Corona del Mar quarterback Todd Kehrli might miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a dislocated elbow Friday night.

Kehrli, who led the Sea Kings to a Southern Section championship as a sophomore and had his junior season interrupted when he severely cut a finger, was injured on a sack late in the fourth quarter of a 21-10 loss to University in the Sea View League opener.

After going down, Kehrli said, he rolled over on his nonpassing arm. “I could hear ripping but nothing was torn,” Kehrli said.

He was taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach where doctors discovered bone chips and surgery was performed to remove them.

Kehrli said he will be in a cast for two weeks but wasn’t sure whether he would be able to recover in time to play again this season. The Sea Kings have four games remaining.

Matt Evans, a junior who plays cornerback and punts for Corona del Mar, will start at quarterback Friday against Newport Harbor. Evans, who was the starting quarterback for the junior varsity last season, has completed four of 10 passes for 37 yards this season.
