School: Edison High

Sport: Cross-country

Class: Senior

In 1987 as a freshman who had run competitively for only a few months, Taylor surprised the local cross-country community by finishing eighth at the state championship meet. Four years later, Taylor has proven she is no flash in the pan. She hasn’t lost a race this season, and Saturday turned back her toughest challenge--from Sunny Hills sophomore Carrie Garritson--in winning the seeded race of the Orange County Championships. Taylor and Garritson ran together for much of the race, but Taylor pulled away in the final half-mile to win in 17 minutes 5 seconds to 17:13 for Garritson. Both times broke the meet record of 17:26 set by Katella’s Martha Pinto last season. “That record’s going to stay for a while . . . unless Garritson breaks it next year,” Edison Coach Stan Stauble said.

Other top performers:

Erika Asmuss, who swept six singles sets for Mater Dei, including a 7-5 victory over Rosary’s Joyce Cruz in a 79-75 Angelus League tennis victory.

Kathleen Bunce, who had 39 kills and was named the most valuable player while helping Capistrano Valley Christian win the Brentwood volleyball tournament.

Maureen McLaren, who had 18 kills for Newport Harbor in a four-game victory over Corona del Mar.
