SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Undefeated Garden Grove rallied for 19 points in the final seven minutes 15 seconds of the fourth quarter Friday night to avoid an upset at the hands of Bolsa Grande, and pull away to a 25-13 Garden Grove League victory at Garden Grove High School.

Bolsa Grande (1-7, 0-5) led, 13-6, well into the fourth quarter as the Argonauts (8-0, 5-0) were hampered by penalties (eight for 100 yards) and an ineffective passing game.

But Garden Grove still had a dangerous weapon in Jim Sebreros, who ran for 180 yards in 19 carries and scored three touchdowns and a two-point conversion to lead the Argonauts’ rally. Sebreros has rushed for 615 yards and nine touchdowns in his past three games.

Bolsa capitalized on two Garden Grove miscues to take a surprising 13-6 lead. Adam Gilbert jarred the ball loose from Garden Grove quarterback Brian Schneider and Tafa Jefferson recovered the fumble on the Argonaut 45-yard line. The turnover set up a second-quarter, four-yard touchdown run by Bolsa quarterback Brian Taylor for a 6-6 tie at halftime.

Bolsa Grande went ahead in the third quarter when Garden Grove punter Mario Guerrero was unable to kick the ball after a low snap from center, and the Matadors took over on the Garden Grove 24-yard line. Lepaga Moaliitele broke through left tackle on the first play to give Bolsa the lead.

Garden Grove rallied on a 75-yard drive, capped by Sebreros’ second seven-yard touchdown run and subsequent two-point conversion run, for a 14-13 lead. The Argonauts’ Glenn Sorensen recovered a Bolsa fumble on the ensuing kickoff. On the first play, Sebreros broke away for a 24-yard scoring run with 6:35 remaining. Schneider’s two-point conversion pass to Brandon Hoalton upped the lead to 22-13.
