Orange Holds Off Canyon for 10-7 Victory

Canyon put on a late surge in a Century League game Friday night at El Modena High, but Orange got its second league victory, 10-7, and spoiling the Comanches’ homecoming.

Canyon quarterback Gunnar Strunz, a 6-foot, 175-pound sophomore who replaced injured Brian Jalowiec three weeks ago, helped get the Comanches going when he drove them from Canyon’s 37 to Orange’s 15 with 6 minutes 20 seconds left in the game. Orange had a 10-0 lead at the time.

Strunz threw to John Werhaus for a 13-yard gain on the next play. Daryl Lawrence rushed for the first down on a fourth-and-two play, advancing the ball to the one-yard-line for Canyon (2-5-1, 0-3). With six minutes left, tailback Jeff Brunswig went in for the score, bringing the Comanches within, 10-7.

Canyon got the ball back twice late in the game but couldn’t score.

Orange (4-3-1, 2-1) got its first points on Micah Knorr’s 25-yard field goal with 8:23 left in the first quarter. The Panthers didn’t score again until the 9:24 mark of the fourth quarter.
