ROUNDUP : Hoover Shocks Crescenta Valley for 1st Victory

Share

It took a lot of help from snakebitten Crescenta Valley High, but Hoover finally broke into the win column with a 7-0 Pacific League victory Friday night at Glendale High.

The lone scoring drive for Hoover (1-7, 1-2 in league play) was only 24 yards in five plays, and was capped by Sevak Shirvanian’s four-yard scoring run. The drive was set up by a Crescenta Valley fumble, one of three Falcon turnovers.

Three plays after Richie Harris recovered the fumble at the 24, the Tornadoes faced a fourth-and-inches situation at the Crescenta Valley 14. Quarterback Nathan Dishington drew the Falcons offside twice in a row with long counts to move the ball to the four, setting up Shirvanian’s run.

The loss was the second for the Falcons (4-4, 0-3) since quarterbacks Aaron Schaefer and David Fielder were dismissed from the team for unspecified disciplinary reasons.

Crescenta Valley employed the single wing and tailback Paul Lopez passed for 49 yards and ran for 33 more, but turned the ball over three times.

Crescenta Valley penetrated Hoover territory twice in the final three minutes, but both drives died. On the first occasion, defensive back Michael Wunder intercepted a pass by Lopez at the 25. The second ended at midfield on a sack of Lopez by lineman Anthony Cascarano as time expired.
