With starting quarterback Simon Fuentes out with an injury, Garden Grove has had to depend more heavily on its running game. Coach Jeff Buenafe has made an effort not to depend too heavily on any one of his three running backs--seniors Derek Smith and Brian Rall and Sebreros. For the first half of the season, Smith was the top ground-gainer for the Argonauts, who have a chance to be the first Garden Grove team to finish the regular season undefeated since 1964. Sebreros, 5 feet 8, 160 pounds, broke loose in the team’s sixth game, gaining 515 yards and nine touchdowns in the past three games. “He’s just made things happen when he’s gotten the ball, and we’ve more or less given it to him when he’s in a rhythm and let him do his deal,” Buenafe said. Friday, Sebreros led the Argonauts’ comeback victory over Bolsa Grande. He gained 180 yards and scored three touchdowns--including two in the fourth quarter--in a 25-13 victory. After his first fourth-quarter touchdown, Sebreros scored on a two-point conversion to give Garden Grove a 14-13 lead.

Other top performers:

Steve Jackson, who had 11 lead tackles, three assists, two blocked point-after attempts and a sack in Marina’s 19-12 victory over Norco.

Mike Jacot, who rushed for 228 yards and six touchdowns for Southern California Christian in its 58-0 victory over Capistrano Valley Christian. The six touchdowns tied the county record set by Jim Gleed of Dana Hills in 1979.
