The Chatsworth High girls’ volleyball team made its earliest exit from the City Section 4-A Division playoffs in the tenure of Coach Steve Berk on Thursday at Venice.

Chatsworth, the 4-A runner-up two years ago and a semifinalist last season, was beaten by Venice, 15-0, 15-12, 15-9.

“This is early, that’s for sure,” said Berk, who is in his fourth year.

Jody Paperno had a team-high nine kills for Chatsworth, which was seeded fifth after finishing second to El Camino Real in the West Valley League.

3-A DIVISION

Van Nuys d. Lincoln 15-13, 15-13, 15-13--Cora Everding had 10 kills and two service aces to lead host Van Nuys to three consecutive two-point victories and into a position to exact revenge.

The win sets up a rematch of last season’s semifinal loss to Marshall. The two teams will play in the semifinals Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Hamilton High.

“I don’t think our girls will be afraid of them this year,” Coach Dave Besseler said of Marshall. “Last year, I think we were a little intimidated because they were so good.”

Van Nuys (11-4) has never made it to the finals in four seasons under Besseler, but has advanced to the semifinal round three times.

The Wolves are seeded fourth.

Bonnie Moreno had 13 kills for Lincoln, which was seeded fifth.

Marshall d. Birmingham, 15-9, 15-11, 15-10--Tina Larson had 15 kills for Birmingham but it wasn’t enough to stave off a loss at Marshall.

Kathy Ham had 22 kills for Marshall (14-1), the No. 1-seeded team in the division.

Birmingham finished 9-6.

Marshall will play Van Nuys in the semifinals at Hamilton High on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Narbonne d. Sylmar, 13-15, 15-7, 15-3, 15-10--Tina Taschereau had 12 kills for Sylmar, but Narbonne rallied from an one-game deficit at Carson.
