BIG WEST ROUNDUP : Fresno State Runs Up 59 Points, Routs Pacific

Fresno State running backs Anthony Daigle and Lorenzo Neal each ran for more than 100 yards as the Bulldogs rolled up 407 yards rushing and easily won the battle of college football’s top two offenses in a 59-14 Big West Conference victory over Pacific Saturday at Fresno.

Daigle had touchdown runs of two and 12 yards in the first half and scored his third touchdown on a 10-yard run in the third quarter. He finished with 107 yards in 17 carries.

Neal scored two touchdowns and finished with 113 yards to mark the first time this season two Fresno State running backs have passed the 100-yard mark.

With the score 7-7 in the first quarter, the Bulldogs, 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big West, pulled away on Daigle’s 12-yard run and Derek Mahoney’s 22-yard field goal.

Neal and Ron Rivers ran for second-quarter scores to give Fresno State a 31-7 halftime lead as the Tigers fell to 4-6 and 3-2.

Fresno State, already leading, 45-7, in the fourth quarter, added two more touchdowns when reserve quarterback Brian Rowe connected with Michael Ross on a 64-yard pass play and Malcolm Seabron returned a punt 64 yards for a score.

Pacific’s Aaron Turner kept alive his streak of touchdown receptions when he caught a seven-yard scoring pass from reserve quarterback Dave Henigan with 26 seconds remaining. Turner has caught at least one touchdown pass in 13 consecutive games, an ongoing NCAA record.

Utah State 27, Nevada Las Vegas 14--Ron Lopez threw a pair of five-yard touchdown passes and the Aggies took advantage of eight Rebel turnovers for a Big West Conference victory at Las Vegas.

Lopez completed 18 of 34 passes for 208 yards, with three interceptions.

The Aggies (3-6, 3-2), coming off a 20-19 victory over Fresno State, intercepted five passes and recovered three fumbles to assure UNLV (1-4, 3-6) its fifth consecutive losing season.

Ron Edwards returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage to give the Aggies a 7-0 lead, but UNLV tied it on Shannon McLean’s five-yard touchdown run with 7:59 left in the first quarter.

Edwards intercepted another pass and returned it 31 yards midway through the second quarter. Two plays later, Lopez connected with Tracey Jenkins with his first five-yard scoring pass to give Utah State a 14-7 advantage with 6:13 left in the half.

Lopez threw another five-yarder to Rod Moore as the Aggies increased their lead to 21-7.

UNLV’s Derek Stott completed 11 of 27 passes for 105 yards with five interceptions.
