HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Torrey Pines, USDHS Advance in Tennis

The top two seeded teams in the San Diego Section 3-A and 2-A tennis playoffs won in overwhelming fashion during Wednesday’s quarterfinal play.

Torrey Pines (22-0) advanced to today’s semifinals with a 17-1 victory over Monte Vista. USDHS (19-2) blanked Valhalla, 18-0.

Both teams lost only 15 games en route to victory.

In other 3-A matches:

Mira Mesa 11, Morse 7--Angela Cruz and Veronica Bausova swept in singles for No. 4 Mira Mesa (15-1). Morse is 11-4.

Poway 12, Serra 6--No. 2 Poway won seven of the nine doubles sets. Nikki Willette swept in singles for Serra (9-6).

Bonita Vista 14, San Dieguito 4--No. 3 Bonita Vista (15-2) swept in doubles against the Mustangs (14-6).

2-A quarterfinals

La Jolla 11, Rancho Bernardo 7--Renee Gold upset RB’s Mary Beth Maggart, 6-4, and swept in singles. La Jolla (10-8) won all but one doubles set. Rancho Bernardo is 18-5.

Bishop’s 17, University City 1--No. 3 Bishop’s improved to 17-4.

San Pasqual 17, Coronado 1--Molly Gavin didn’t lose a game for No. 2 San Pasqual (19-4).

Volleyball Division I

Mira Mesa d. San Diego--No. 1 Mira Mesa (25-2) got nine kills from Melissa Wickman and eight from Jennifer Miner to score a 15-5, 15-4, 15-8 victory over San Diego (7-9).

Poway d. Patrick Henry--Behind 20 service aces and Allison Brady’s eight kills, No. 2 Poway (13-2) beat Henry (7-17) in 45 minutes, 15-2, 15-2, 15-4.

Orange Glen d. Southwest--Sarah Adair (16 kills), Amber Cravy (15) led Orange Glen (9-14) in the comeback, 15-2, 5-15, 5-15, 15-8, 15-9. Southwest dropped to 21-9.

Mt. Carmel d. Hilltop--Scia Maumausolo had seven kills and Ann Bananal served five aces as No. 3 Mt. Carmel (10-5) won, 15-2, 15-1, 15-6, over Hilltop (13-16).

San Dieguito d. Chula Vista--No. 4 San Dieguito (20-13) rolled to a 15-1, 15-6, 15-11 victory. Chula Vista is 12-6.

Rancho Buena Vista d. Bonita Vista--RBV (13-14) upset 19-5 Bonita Vista, 15-8, 15-9, 15-17, 15-10.

Fallbrook d. Granite Hills--Fallbrook (6-11) got 12 kills from Rachel Christensen and nine from Terra Hawkins to beat Granite Hills, 15-10, 15-2, 15-7. Granite Hills is 8-16.

Vista d. Rancho Bernardo--RB (13-4) got 13 kills from Dara Severson in a losing effort as Vista (12-11) scored a 15-9, 9-15, 15-12, 13-15, 15-9 victory.

Division II

Torrey Pines d. San Marcos--The division’s top seed (23-5) needed only 52 minutes to put away the Knights (12-14), 15-2, 15-2, 15-4.

Monte Vista d. Carlsbad--Kathy Foti had 28 assists and Amy Bonacorsi had 10 kills for No. 2 Monte Vista (35-3), which won 15-6, 15-4, 15-8.

Grossmont d. El Camino--Jolie Oliver had six kills to lead No. 4 Grossmont (19-8) over El Camino (11-14), winning 10-15, 15-3, 15-8, 16-14.

University City d. Mar Vista--UC (19-9) won, 15-10, 15-3, 15-6.

Escondido d. El Capitan--Escondido (16-7) got nine kills from Cindy VanderWoude in a 15-10, 16-14, 15-4 victory.

Serra d. Helix--Sheryl Dahlkey had nine kills as Serra (12-11) won, 16-14, 12-15, 15-10, 7-15, 15-8. Helix is 14-9.

Division V

Bishop’s d. Tri-City Christian--Kai Enos had 11 kills and Kaylie Orr had five for Bishop’s (11-8), which scored a 15-11, 15-7, 15-3 victory.

La Jolla Country Day d. Santa Fe Christian--LJCD (5-14) breezed into the quarterfinals, 15-5, 15-6, 15-9.

Marian Catholic d. Lutheran--Marian (8-7) won 15-3, 15-4, 15-0.

Julian d. Vincent Memorial--Jennifer Heckle led Julian (14-6) with six kills in a 15-7, 15-0, 15-9 victory.
