In the City Eastern League

Mira Mesa 35, Patrick Henry 0--Mira Mesa’s Chad Davis, who has played for three high schools in his four years of varsity football, moved to No. 2 on the National High School Federation passing list by completing 25 of 35 passes for 282 and five touchdowns.

The 6-foot-2 quarterback who first played in Palm Springs and last year at Torrey Pines, has thrown for 9,077 yards. He moved past Ben Gardow of Chippewa Falls (Wis.) McDonell Central into second place. Gardow threw for 9,056 yards from 1986-89.

As Mira Mesa (7-3, 3-1) enters the playoffs, Davis trails all-time leader Todd Marinovich, who threw for 9,182 yards for Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley from 1984-87.

City Western League

La Jolla 33, Kearny 7--No. 4 La Jolla (10-0, 4-0) capitalized on two Kearny turnovers to score three touchdowns in the last three minutes of the first quarter. The Vikings won the league title and in all likelihood will be seeded second in the 2-A playoffs behind El Camino. La Jolla halfback E.J. Watson ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. La Jolla quarterback Andy Anello completed six of 13 attempts for 145 yards and two touchdowns, both to John Zuanich. Kearny is 7-3, 2-2.

USDHS 49, Mission Bay 14--The No. 5 Dons built a 35-0 halftime lead and cruised behind their ground game. USDHS (9-1, 3-1) got 87 yards and two touchdowns from Chris Lewis and 55 yards on four carries from Brady Walker in the first half. Scott Pharis finished with 100 yards on four carries. Mission Bay finished 3-6, 0-4.

Grossmont 3-A League

Grossmont 28, Monte Vista 7--Jason Eskridge ran for 185 yards on 28 carries to the break Grossmont Conference record for rushing yards in a season with 1,846. Tom Vardell of Granite Hills had 1,812 in 1986. Grossmont (9-0-1, 4-0) finished unbeaten for the second time in three seasons. Monte Vista is 4-6, 2-2.

Helix 42, Granite Hills 18--Quarterback Gregg Wilbur completed 10 of 16 passes for 188 yards and four touchdowns as Helix (6-2-1, 3-1) pulled away in the second half. Jeremy Gottlieb had two receptions, both for touchdowns, and Andreal Climon had three receptions with touchdowns of 17 and 29 yards. Chris Baker ran for 119 yards on 10 carries, with scoring runs of 48 and 22 yards. Tom Fordham completed 23 of 50 passes for 191 yards for Granite Hills (3-6, 0-4).

Avocado League

San Marcos 21, Escondido 14--San Marcos running back Mark Frazier scored his third touchdown with 1:17 left in the game, then Knight linebacker Curt Gallego intercepted a pass at the San Marcos five-yard line with 11 seconds left to preserve the victory. Frazier finished with 194 yards on 28 carries. Garland Copeland, despite the late interception, had a good game, throwing for 131 yards by completing 12 of 19 attempts for Escondido (5-5, 4-3). San Marcos improved to 7-3, 5-2.

San Pasqual 21, Carlsbad 13--Leading 13-7 at the half, Carlsbad tried an onside kick to open the second half, and it backfired. San Pasqual fielded the kick and scored in seven plays to take the lead for good, 14-13. Billy Geddes ran for 112 yards on five carries, one an 88-yard touchdown. Daryl Hawkins added 81 yards on 13 carries. San Pasqual (6-4, 4-3) held Carlsbad (3-7, 1-6) to minus four yards in the fourth quarter.

El Camino 31, Rancho Bernardo 7--After taking a 22-0 halftime lead, No. 2 El Camino (9-1, 7-0) played mostly reserves. El Camino halfback Mike Gee ran for 92 yards and a touchdown, and fullback Daniel Esposito had 74 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, middle linebacker Elias Noa had 11 tackles, a sack and a blocked field goal. Outside linebacker Abdul McCullough had six tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Rancho Bernardo is 4-6, 2-5.

City Central League

Lincoln 35, Madison 3--Madison (0-9-1, 0-3-1) managed the only points allowed by Lincoln (7-3, 4-0) during league play. Antoine Harris got things started for Lincoln with a 66-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Marlon Scott scored two touchdowns for Lincoln, and Jimmy Green added a touchdown and 84 yards on only three carries.

Hoover 19, Crawford 7--Jaime Blake rushed for 129 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries and added a 55-yard interception return for another touchdown as Hoover (2-7-1, 1-2-1) may have put a crimp on Crawford’s playoff hopes. The Colts (3-6-1, 2-2) are tied for second with San Diego, a team they beat last week, but San Diego (6-3-1) has a better overall mark. Crawford quarterback Dominique Mosler completed 12 of 21 passes for 132 yards.

City Harbor League

St. Augustine 24, Coronado 9--Chris Sovay ran for two touchdowns and quarterback Aaron Buckner completed 11 of 19 for 132 yards and a touchdown for St. Augustine (6-3-1, 4-0). Coronado fell to 5-4-1, 1-2-1.

Metro Conference

Chula Vista 28, Castle Park 14--No. 7 Chula Vista (8-2, 7-0) remained unbeaten in its last 31 league games dating back four seasons. The Spartans rushed to a 21-0 lead behind Lamar Bailey and a defense that held Castle Park standout running back Anthony Davis to 43 yards on 14 carries. Bailey finished with 219 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries. Castle Park (5-4-1, 4-2-1) lost for the first time in five games.

Hilltop 31, Sweetwater 27--Hilltop’s Jorge Munoz, the county’s leading passer and No. 2 on the all-time section list, completed 17 of 23 throws for 227 yards and two two touchdowns. Bobby Lugo had six catches for 101 yards for Hilltop (8-2, 6-1). Sweetwater is 4-6, 2-5.

Palomar League

Fallbrook 23, RBV 7--No. 9 RBV jumped to a first-quarter lead, but Fallbrook went on a 23-0 run. John Dutton (22 of 35) passed for 290 yards for Fallbrook (7-3, 5-2). The Warriors’ Robbie Cosner caught four passes for 73 yards, Travis Case seven for 79 yards.

Eight-Man League

Julian 66, Bishop’s 26--Dilon Yohner completed eight of 12 passes for 352 yards and four touchdowns for Julian (5-4, 3-2). Steve Lara caught five passes for 190 yards. Bishop’s finished 2-7, 1-4.

Nonleague

University City 34, Clairemont 6--Daranzol Sheppard scored on runs of one, 27 and 67 yards and threw a 56-yard touchdown pass for University City (5-4). Clairemont fell to 4-6.

Serra 17, San Diego 14--Marshall Brenner, a senior, kicked a 19-yard field goal on his first career attempt with five minutes left to lift the Conquistadors (5-5). San Diego (6-3-1) missed a 25-yard field goal attempt with five seconds left. Billy Dill rushed 12 times for 80 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown, for Serra, which is now in excellent position for its first playoff berth since 1981. Tony Bratcher had 68 yards on two carries, including a 44-yard touchdown, for San Diego.
