HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Torrid L.A. Baptist Sweeps Volleyball Quarterfinal

L.A. Baptist High continued its march through the Southern Section 1-A Division girls’ volleyball playoffs with a 15-13, 15-9, 15-6 quarterfinal victory over host Flintridge Prep on Tuesday night.

L.A. Baptist, which has lost just one game in its three postseason matches, held off Flintridge Prep’s first-game rally Tuesday to set the tone.

“We jumped out 12-2 (in the first game), and they really fought back,” Coach Sue Newcomb said. “We always jumped out and they always fought back.”

Middle blockers Sarah Rameson and Lucrieta Haynes each had 11 kills for L.A. Baptist (17-2), which is seeded fourth in the division.

Setter Amy Anderson had 16 assists and backcourt specialist Gina Aust had 13 digs for L.A. Baptist.

In other quarterfinal matches:

Nordhoff d. Moorpark, 15-13, 15-4, 15-8--Kortney Rogers had 18 kills and five stuff blocks to lead Nordhoff in a 2-A match at Moorpark.

Alison Nofrey added 12 kills and had 12 service points for Nordhoff (15-1).

Sami Sawyer had 10 kills and seven service aces for Nordhoff, which handed Moorpark (17-1) its first loss.

Capistrano Valley d. Royal, 15-8, 16-14, 15-8--Jennifer Hamilton led Royal with 11 kills and four blocks and Stacy Kauffman added six kills for Royal (18-4) in a 5-A match at Capistrano Valley.

“We were just a little off tonight,” Royal Coach Bob Ferguson said. “If we had won the second game, it would have made a big difference, but it just wasn’t our night.”

Royal led, 14-10, in the second game, before Capistrano Valley, seeded No. 3, came back with six consecutive points.

Marymount d. Notre Dame, 15-7, 15-11, 15-12--Marymount ended Notre Dame’s season with a sweep of a 4-A semifinal at Marymount.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Westlake 13, Estancia 5--Westlake’s No. 1 singles player, Joanna Mazur, swept all three of her matches in a 3-A match at the Westlake Village Racquet Club.

Jennifer Reese won two of her three singles matches for Westlake (18-2).

The Warriors’ top doubles team of Kim Stuart and Alison Levitt won all three of its matches, as did the No. 2 doubles team of Lauren Mazur and Andrea Hura.

Estancia finished 10-6.

Harvard-Westlake 10, Laguna Beach 8--Buoyed by the strong performances of singles players Lindsay Wasserman and Romy Mehlman, the Wolverines improved to 18-3 and earned a berth in the 3-A semifinals Thursday against Camarillo, which defeated Alhambra, 12-6.

Wasserman, at No. 1 singles, and Mehlman, at No. 2 singles, each won all three matches to pace Harvard-Westlake.

At No. 3 singles, Lisa Smolinsky won two of three matches and the doubles team of Gloria Abramson and Jenny Kreisberg won two of their three matches to round out the scoring for the Wolverines.

Chadwick 16, Quartz Hill 2--No. 1 singles player Philippa Gray defeated Patty Cho and the No. 1 doubles team of Amanda Gray and Deepa Selvakumar defeated Courtney Schultz and Katie Arnett for the host Rebels’ only points in a 1-A quarterfinal match.

Quartz Hill finished 17-3.

Camarillo 12, Alhambra 6--Camarillo moved a step closer to a third match with league rival Westlake by beating Alhambra in a 3-A Division quarterfinal at Camarillo.

The Scorpions, who split their league matches with Westlake, will meet Harvard-Westlake in the semifinals Thursday.
