The Cavaliers return two starters in Robledo, an all-league honorable mention who averaged 9.1 points last season and who is probably the tallest point guard in the league, and Ramirez, who averaged 7.0 and made 34 three-point baskets. But Heusser thinks the team is still a little green. “We are a year away from being a solid team,” said Heusser, who begins his third season as coach of the girls’ team after 16 years with the boys’ varsity. Heusser said the Cavaliers will have to utilize their quickness to counter a lack of size. The team’s tallest players are Olmedo and Cornett. “We are going to try and do some things with our defense, like pressing and being aggressive, to help us offensively,” said Heusser, who plans to use mostly a man-to-man defense. Depending on how well they execute, the Cavaliers could be in the fight for one of the playoff spots. “You get past Rancho Alamitos, and it’s going to be interesting,” Heusser said. “I don’t see another dominant team. It’s going to be a real contest with the rest of the teams.” Santiago finished tied for third in the league last season and advanced to the Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs, where it lost in the second round to an excellent Tustin team, 65-37.
