OUTLOOK
With four returning starters, Canyon should challenge for the league title. Waggoner, the Century League most valuable player last season, leads the way after averaging 20 points, four rebounds, and four assists per game as a wing player. But Fitzgibbons wants more from the 5-foot-7 Waggoner in ‘91-92. “At our season-ending banquet last March, I told Erin, ‘We don’t have a point guard now, so you’re it,’ ” Fitzgibbons said. Waggoner’s supporting cast includes Rathod, who averaged 10 points per game while earning honorable mention all-league honors, and Petronis, who averaged eight points per game. “We’ve got the team to win the league title,” Fitzgibbons said. “It’s just a matter of seeing how deep we can go and if the young players can fit in.” Fitzgibbons is excited about the three freshmen, Brown, DeLucia, and Shabahang. “All three will be in my top nine,” Fitzgibbons said. “Dawn (Brown) just turned 13, and she’ll be playing against girls who are 18, so the test will be if these kids can play at this competitive level. But from what they’ve shown me, I think they can.”
